Lowrey Elementary and Middle School

Principal Bio

Samir H. Makki

I am Samir H. Makki, the principal of Lowrey Elementary and Middle School. I have been at Lowrey for the past ten years. Before I became an administrator, I taught math and physics for six years at Edsel Ford High School in Dearborn. I am also in my twelfth year as a part time college instructor of Calculus.
I came to the United States in 1985 from Lebanon during the civil war where I had taught Mathematics for sixteen years in colleges and high schools. I had also served as a test administrator and coordinator at the national level in the area of mathematics.

In 1987, I went back to school to pursue my higher education at Wayne State University where I earned a Masters degree in Mathematics and later in 1992 a Doctorate degree in Curriculum and Instruction with emphasis in Mathematics Education. A year later I earned my administrative endorsement.

Lowrey School is my love and my business. Every day I see 1,350 faces from Kindergarten to eighth grade. I am passionate about those faces and I consider each one of them as my own child (I have two of my own). I believe that smart is not something that you are born with; it is something you work hard for. My students know that very well and always try to work hard and do their best.

Lowrey is a very beautiful school with unique architectural features. It was built in 1927 and dedicated to Harvey H. Lowrey in recognition of his effort and good work as a Superintendent of the schools.

Since its opening and until 1969, Lowrey was a K-12 building. At one time nearly 2000 students from all over town and abroad would enter its doors every year attracted by the variety of programs and offerings, especially the Department of Special Education.

Lowrey School is now the only K-8 school in the Dearborn District with a large bilingual, Title I and special education department. Our 168 staff members work very hard every day to provide the best education and services to our 1,350 students.

Lowrey is the home of the Polar Bear and we are all very proud of our school.
