Middle School Courses
Keyboarding Grade 6:
Course Description: This is an exploratory class. Students are introduced to keyboarding. Proper keyboarding technique, rather than speed, is stressed. Students are also introduced to keyboarding skills, computer hardware components, word processing, Internet skills, and ethical issues.
Content Standards:
- Students will demonstrate a sound understanding of the nature and operation of technology systems.
- Students will be proficient in the use of technology.
- Students understand the ethical, cultural, and societal issues related to technology.
- Students will practice responsible use of technology systems, information and software.
- Students will develop positive attitudes toward technology uses that support lifelong learning, collaboration, personal pursuits and productivity.
- The student will keyboard 15-20 words-per-minute using the home row keys and proper posture.
- The student will be able to use word processing software to edit, format and print documents.
- The student will understand Internet safety and use the Internet for specific assignments.
Computer Applications Grade 7 and 8:
Course Description: This course included keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheet, database, graphics, presentation and data retrieval. Students will use various technology tools create computer-generated projects and explore technology related careers. Content standards are based on the Michigan Educational Technology Standards (METS) and the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) National Educational Technology Standards for Students (NETS). It meets the requirements for the State of Michigan Certification of Eighth Grade Technology Literacy and the DPS High School Computer Applications course requirement.
Middle School Multimedia
Course Description: This is an elective, introductory course for designing multimedia presentations. Projects will be created using integrated software. Ethical and current technological issues will be addressed. This course is offered at the second semester of 7th grade or during the 8th grade.
Content Standards for Computer Applications and Multimedia:
- Students will demonstrate a sound understanding of the nature and operation of technology systems.
- Students will be proficient in the use of technology.
- Students understand the ethical, cultural, and societal issues related to technology.
- Students will practice responsible use of technology systems, information and software.
- Students will develop positive attitudes toward technology uses that support lifelong learning, collaboration, personal pursuits and productivity.
- Students will use productivity tools to collaborate in constructing technology enhanced models, publications, and produce other creative works.
- Students will use telecommunications to collaborate, publish, and interact with peers, experts and other audiences.
- Students will use a variety of media and formats to communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences.
- Students will use technology to locate, evaluate and collect information from a variety of sources.
- Students will use technology tools to process data and report results.
- Students will evaluate and select new information resources and technological innovations based on the appropriateness for specific tasks.
- Students will use technology resources for solving problems and making formal decisions.
- Students will use technology resources for solving real world problems.
